Why 21.5 Inches Is the Easiest Size to Design Around

Of all the display sizes you could pick, 21.5 inches is the one the rest of the industry has already standardised on. That matters more than it sounds when you are adding touch to a product.

• It is the standard 1080p monitor format. 1920 × 1080 at 21.5 inches is what the entire monitor and signage industry builds to. Panels, driver boards, housings and mounting hardware are commodities at this size, and the touch panel follows the same established active area — roughly 476 × 268 mm for a 16:9 panel.
• Enclosures already exist. Kiosk cabinets, wall-mount bezels, VESA brackets and open-frame chassis are stocked in 21.5-inch variants by dozens of suppliers. If your mechanical design is already built around the format, this panel drops into it.
• Replacement is straightforward. A product designed around 21.5 inches is not locked to a single supplier. If supply changes in year five, the mechanical and optical interfaces stay the same.
• It is large enough for real interfaces. At 1080p across 21.5 inches — about 102 PPI — you can show a data table, a form, or a full product catalogue and still have comfortable touch targets.

Contrast that with an odd size, where every bracket has to be tooled and every enclosure is a custom part. Choosing the standardised diagonal is a way of buying down mechanical risk.
