A 2:3 view area suits the things people hold and the things mounted on a wall:

• Wall controllers and room panels — lighting, HVAC, access and intercom panels are usually tall and narrow because the wall space between studs is.

• Barcode and inventory terminals — tall enough for a scrolling list, narrow enough to grip.
• Portable medical devices — probes, monitors and handheld diagnostic tools.
• Compact HMI panels — where a machine face has a vertical slot rather than a horizontal one.
• This is a genuine 3.5-inch 320 × 480 portrait panel, not a landscape panel rotated in software.

Rotating a landscape panel in firmware is always an option, but it costs something: the FPC tail then exits on a long side rather than a short one, which is frequently the difference between a flex that reaches the connector and one that does not. Fitting a portrait panel avoids that entirely.
