Portrait suits content that stacks

At 480 × 800 the module is 1.667:1 tall — close to the 2:3 shape used by phone and handheld interfaces. It is the right shape when content runs vertically:

• Scrolling lists — menus, message threads, event logs.
• Readouts stacked one per row — a measurement per line, which is how instrument and meter UIs naturally read.
• Anything already designed for a phone or handheld — the aspect ratio and density match, so artwork and layout logic transfer.
• The honest boundary: it is the wrong shape for a wide dashboard, a video image, or a control panel laid out side by side. Those want landscape, and several other 4.3-inch modules serve them better. Choose on content shape, not on the diagonal number.

IPS means the viewing angle problem disappears

The specification states IPS, normal black, with viewing direction ALL and 80° typical in all four directions at CR ≥ 10.

On a TN panel this is where the work starts: one direction is best, another is narrower, and there is a gray scale inversion direction you have to keep the viewer away from — some of our other 4.3-inch modules document exactly that, with 12 o'clock best and 6 o'clock inversion, or the reverse. Mounting orientation becomes a design decision with a wrong answer.

On this module it is not. All four directions measure the same, so you decide orientation on mechanical grounds alone. That matters for handheld devices, which get looked at from whatever angle the user happens to hold them, and for anything mounted where you cannot control who stands where.
