Product Description

The Mirror Border

The border print on the rear of the cover glass is specified as Pantone 877C with a mirror effect. Functionally it does two jobs.

It hides what is behind the glass — the sensor edge, the adhesive line, the display's own bezel — so the visible border is a clean, uniform metallic surface rather than a view into the stack. And it gives the product a deliberate appearance when the screen is off: instead of a black rectangle, you get a mirror finish, which is why this treatment is common on consumer equipment, bathroom and kitchen panels, hotel-room controls, and anything where the device is visible in a room and should not look like a switched-off monitor.

Because the print is on the rear of the cover glass, it is protected by the glass itself — it cannot be scratched off by cleaning or contact, which is the usual failure mode for a border printed on the front surface.

If you do not want a mirror finish, the border colour and treatment can be changed; it is a printing specification, not a fixed property of the glass.

What this drawing does show, which most do not, is a set of manufacturing details that say something about how the panel is put together:

  • UV glue around the chip pins — strain relief on the controller's solder joints, which is where flexed assemblies usually fail.
  • Grounding layers on both sides of the FPC — shielding on the tail, which carries I2C and the interrupt out of a noisy enclosure.
  • Protective circuits on the input signal lines — ESD protection at the signals that reach the outside world.
  • ITO pattern on both sides must not be visible under front brightness — a cosmetic requirement on the sensor, checked rather than hoped for.
  • Protective film on both faces — the panel arrives protected and stays protected through assembly.

Individually these are small. Together they are the difference between a panel that survives five years in the field and one that generates warranty returns — and they are the kind of thing you can only see on a drawing that specifies them.
