Portrait, and Why It Isn't a Detail

Nearly every industrial panel in this size range is landscape. That is fine for a wide dashboard and awkward for almost everything you hold in one hand or mount on a wall at eye height.

At 320 × 480 with the long axis vertical, this module suits the shapes that actually come up:

• Handheld instruments and meters — the natural grip is portrait, and a vertical list of readings is what the software wants to show.
• Wall-mounted controllers — thermostats, intercoms, access panels and room controllers are almost always taller than they are wide, because that is the shape of the space between studs and the shape of a door frame.
• Elevator and door panels — floor indicators and car displays are vertical by nature.
• Portable medical devices — infusion pumps, handheld monitors and therapy controllers are built around a vertical enclosure.
• Wearable and body-worn terminals — anything clipped to a belt or held in a palm.

The pixels are square — 0.153 × 0.153 mm, about 166 PPI — so circles render as circles and no aspect correction is needed. And at 320 × 480 a 16-bit framebuffer is roughly 300 KB, which sits in the same range as our 4.3-inch panel and comfortably inside the on-chip SRAM of many mainstream MCUs. Check your part's SRAM before budgeting for external memory; you may not need it.
