What this is worth in practice. If you are building a kiosk around a mini-PC, an Android board or an industrial computer, touch becomes a cable you plug in — the operating system recognises a HID touch device and the screen works. There is no bring-up phase, no kernel configuration, and nothing to debug when coordinates are wrong. For teams without embedded software resource, or projects measured in weeks rather than months, that is usually worth more than the cost difference.

When you should not choose USB. Being straight about this saves everyone time. If you are designing your own board around a microcontroller, an I2C panel is cheaper, draws far less power, and takes no space for a controller board. USB makes sense when the host already has a USB port and you want the software to be somebody else's problem. If you are unsure which applies, tell us the host and we will say which is the better buy rather than steering you to the more expensive part.

Ten Points on a Public Screen

Ten simultaneous touch points is the second thing worth noting, and on a panel this size it changes what the screen can be used for.

• Two people at once — a kiosk where an assistant helps a customer, or a service counter with staff and client on the same screen.
• Interactive maps and catalogues — pinch, rotate and two-handed navigation feel natural on a large surface.
• Education and collaboration — a shared screen where several people work together.
• Palm rejection — a controller tracking ten contacts has far more information for deciding which touches are deliberate, which matters when users lean on a large panel.
