Sunlight Readable: Two Optical Paths, Not One Bright Backlight

A transmissive display has one way to fight glare: be brighter than it. That works indoors and fails outdoors, because sunlight is far brighter than any backlight a battery can sustain. A transflective panel takes a different approach — it has a partially reflective layer, so it can use ambient light instead of competing with it.

The last two rows are the reason to specify it. A transmissive panel's legibility falls as the surroundings get brighter; a transflective panel's legibility rises, because there is more light to reflect. That is not a marketing claim, it is how the technology works.

The backlight can be off, not merely dimmed

The practical consequence for a portable product is that the backlight — normally the largest single load in a display module — can be switched off for as long as there is useful ambient light. That is not a small trim on the power budget; it removes the dominant term.

Here that matters more than usual, because the backlight is only 0.384 W to begin with. A product that reads by reflection outdoors and uses a modest backlight indoors has very little display power to budget for at all.
