How transflective behaves as light changes

The direction of travel. A transmissive panel gets harder to read as the surroundings brighten. A transflective one gets easier, because there is more light to reflect — and the anti-glare layer means that extra light arrives as diffuse illumination rather than a mirror image.

The practical consequence for a portable product: the backlight, normally the largest single load in a display module, can be switched off entirely rather than merely dimmed.
