1.1 mm Cover Glass on a Compact Panel

Cover glass thickness is usually where compact panels give ground — thin glass keeps the stack low. This one does not: 1.1 mm, which is about 1.6 times the 0.7 mm used on our other 7-inch panel.

Thicker glass resists impact substantially better, because stiffness rises steeply with thickness. It also deflects less when pressed, which protects the ITO sensor underneath from someone leaning on the screen or pressing hard with a tool. On a compact panel used in a portable or industrial product — where it will be carried, bumped and cleaned — that is worth having.

The cover is toughened glass bonded to the sensor with LOCA, a liquid optically clear adhesive, so there is no air gap inside the touch panel itself. Transmittance is at least 85% and the surface is rated at least 6H.

Quality and Acceptance

Delivery testing follows MIL-STD-105E, general inspection level II, single sampling, with major defects at AQL 0.65, minor at 2.5 and total at 2.5. Appearance is inspected under a 40 W white fluorescent lamp with the surface rotated through 45 to 90 degrees, the eye 300 to 400 mm away, against black and white backing plates, in a class 10,000 clean room.

The non-conformance process is also committed in writing: the purchaser supplies data on the failing samples, supplier analysis is completed within two weeks with three days' notice if that is not possible, and confirmed defects are replaced. That is a commitment you can hold us to rather than a conversation to be had later.

• Portable and handheld terminals — the compact outline keeps the product small, and the 1.1 mm glass survives being carried.

• Embedded and SBC projects — a standard 16:9 view area pairs naturally with a single-board computer outputting 1024 × 600.
